The audition deadline has passed for the 2020 Fall Session. However, we will consider late auditions on a case by case basis, and are specifically looking for more wind and brass players. Please email the Orchestra Manager, Megan Anderson, if you are interested in auditioning.

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the Willamette Valley Junior Honor Symphony’s 2020 Fall Session! To audition for JHS, students must be members of their school instrumental music program and in grades 6-10.

All auditions will be through Video Submission only. Students must register below in order to submit an audition. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email with audition requirements and instructions for submitting your audition video. Videos are due September 18. Returning JHS students as well as new students must both complete the audition process at the beginning of the season.

Due to the challenges presented by Covid-19, this upcoming season will look quite a bit different from past seasons. For the Fall Session, JHS will operate as an online program, consisting of online rehearsals conducted on Zoom with engaging content including exciting synchronous rehearsing, sectionals with coaches, music history and form study, plus workshops on topics such as practicing and tuning! We hope to return to full orchestral rehearsals and repertoire for the Spring Session, but will make all decisions based on Oregon Health Authority and school district guidelines. Either way, we plan to deliver quality musical content to the students of the mid-Willamette Valley, as CYSA has done for the past 38 years!

JHS Audition Requirements 

Strings/Winds/Brass

• 1 octave (minimum) or 2-3 octaves (preferred) major and  minor scale with arpeggios of your choosing.
• 2 contrasting sections (1 lyrical and 1 technical) from a solo or etude in the standard classical repertoire. Please prepare no more than 1-2 minutes of each section. 

Percussion

• Play a 2-octave (minimum) or 3-octave (preferred) major and minor scale with arpeggios of your choosing on a mallet instrument or piano.
• Play one concert snare solo or etude that demonstrates rhythmic and technical ability. 
• Optional: Play an etude or piece for mallet instrument. 

Video Submission Requirements 

• Submit your audition video by emailing it to the CYSA Orchestra Manager, Megan Anderson, at [email protected] as an unlisted YouTube video link, Dropbox link, Google Drive link, or through another large file sharing service. Please include the student's name and instrument in the email subject line. In the body of the email, please state the scales/piece that you perform in the video.
• If you are not able to share your audition video as described above, you may email the video file directly to [email protected]. 
• Make sure your audition video shows you and your instrument clearly in the shot, and that you are in a well-lit room (avoid filming in front of windows).
• Please submit your audition as a single video (no editing or separate takes). 
• Your audition video will be viewed only by the JHS Conductor.
