Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the Corvallis Youth Symphony’s 2021-22 Season! The audition deadline for CYS's 40th Season has passed. ​To audition for CYS, students must be members of their school's instrumental music program and in grades 9-12. For CHS string players, participation in the Intermediate Orchestra class at CHS or participation in a CVHS orchestra class is required to participate in CYS. All auditions will be through video submission only. Students must register below in order to submit an audition. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email with audition requirements and instructions for submitting your audition video. Videos are due July 10, 2021. Returning CYS members do not need to re-audition. Results will be emailed by July 20.

CYS plans to meet and rehearse in-person for the 2021-22 Season if it is safe to do so. All programming decisions will be based on the Oregon Health Authority and school district guidelines. CYS rehearsals are Monday evenings 6:30-9pm, starting on September 13 and continuing through April 2022. 

CYS Audition Requirements 

Strings/Winds/Brass

• 2 octave (minimum) or 3 octave (preferred) major or minor scale of your choice.
• Contrasting sections (1 lyrical and 1 technical) from a solo or etude in the standard classical repertoire. Please prepare no more than 1-2 minutes of each section (2-4 minutes total). 

Percussion

• 2-octave (minimum) or 3-octave (preferred) major or minor scale of your choosing on a mallet instrument or piano.
• Perform one concert snare solo or etude that demonstrates rhythmic and technical ability (ex. Cirone's Portraits in Rhythm). 
• Optional: Play an etude or piece for mallet instrument. 

CYS Membership Requirements

• Membership in the CYS requires membership in the student’s school or district band or orchestra class. 
• Each member must agree to abide by the attendance policy. A high quality ensemble requires a commitment of faithful attendance and industrious concentration at each rehearsal. Illness is excused; homework is not. Students who might have school conflicts (sports or school activities) need to carefully study their calendars to determine the seriousness of conflicts. If your conflict requires you to miss a concert, dress rehearsal, or several rehearsals, you should not participate in CYS this season. 
• CYS members are required to participate in and sell tickets ($150+) for the annual Classical Cabaret fundraiser. Parents/guardians of CYS members are expected to contribute volunteer time toward Classical Cabaret.  
• Parents/Guardians of CYS members are expected to contribute volunteer time toward CYS throughout the year.  
• Tuition for CYS is $560 due at the first rehearsal. Need-based scholarships are available upon application (email [email protected] for an application).

Important CYS 2021-2022 Dates (Attendance Mandatory)

• August 26-28, 2021: CYS Summer Camp (attendance strongly encouraged)  
• September 13, 2021: First CYS rehearsal (6:30-9pm) + CYS Parent Meeting (6:30-7:30pm) 
• December 8, 2021: Dress rehearsal at LaSells Stewart Center, 7-9pm 
• December 12, 2021: CYS Winter Concert, 4pm at LaSells. (Rehearsal 12:00-1:00pm). 
• No CYS rehearsal from December 13-January 2 for Winter Break 
• January 3, 2022: CYS re-starts 
• March 5, 2022: Classical Cabaret, 7:30-11pm
• April 20, 2022: Dress rehearsal at LaSells Stewart Center, 7-9pm 
• April 24, 2022: CYS Spring Concert, 4pm at LaSells. (Rehearsal 12:00-1:00pm).
  
  

Audition Video Submission Requirements 

• Submit your audition video by emailing it to the CYSA Orchestra Manager, Bettine Zimmermann, at [email protected] as an unlisted YouTube video link, Dropbox link, Google Drive link, or through another large file sharing service. Please include the student's name and instrument in the email subject line. In the body of the email, please state the scales/piece that you perform in the video.
• If you are not able to share your audition video as described above, you may email the video file directly to b[email protected].
• Make sure your audition video shows you and your instrument clearly in the shot, and that you are in a well-lit room (avoid filming in front of windows).
• Please submit your audition as a single video (no editing or separate takes). 
• Your audition video will be viewed only by the CYS Conductor.
• You must register to audition below before emailing your audition video.
