Why play the String Bass?

The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the string family. While it may not always receive the same attention as the violin or cello, the bass plays an essential role in nearly every ensemble, providing the depth, rhythm, and foundation that help music come alive.

Beyond the orchestra, the bass can be found in many of the musical styles we listen to every day, including jazz, folk, bluegrass, rock, and R&B. Its versatility allows students to explore a wide range of musical interests while developing strong listening, rhythm, and ensemble skills.

The bass is often an excellent fit for students who are looking for something a little different. Some students are drawn to its rich sound and physical presence, while others enjoy the challenge of learning an instrument that blends melody, rhythm, and teamwork. Students who enjoy patterns, rhythm, creativity, and collaboration often discover that bass feels like a natural home.

At CYSA, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to explore the full range of string instruments. The Bass Program was created to provide an accessible pathway for students who are curious about the instrument, whether they are new to music or have prior experience on another string instrument.

Most importantly, we hope students discover that the bass is not nearly as intimidating as it looks. Learning bass requires patience, practice, and perseverance, but it also creates opportunities for confidence, connection, and joy. Through the process, students become part of a unique and welcoming community of musicians who support one another while helping create the foundation of every ensemble they join.

How to Sign Up

For the 2026-2027 season, families interested in registering for a bass class must first add their names to a sign-up sheet and later complete a registration link. The sign-up sheet for our bass classes will be accessible on the Elementary Strings webpage in September. Spots for each bass class are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Families who successfully add their names to the sheet will receive an email with a registration link on October 1st. If you do not secure a spot on the sign-up sheet, you will not receive a registration link and can email cysassoc@peak.org to join a waitlist. Remember, registration is only complete if you successfully sign up on the sign-up sheet in September and then follow the link sent to your email on October 1st.

Bass Program Overview

Classes will begin October 12th and will end at the final concert on May 29th.
Bass classes will take place once a week on Monday evenings at Crescent Valley High School.
Bass students will perform at the end of the year as a part of the Elementary Strings Level 1 Spring Concert. This concert will take place on Saturday, May 29 at LaSells Stewart Center.
Bass Class Tuition payments may be made in full ($262.50), or as eight monthly payments of $33.
Instruments can be rented from Beacock Music or Nancy Rohns Violin Shop. The cost of the instrument rental is not included in the ES program fees. Please do not rent an instrument until you have registered for a class.

Bass Class Options

Class 1:

Monday evenings from 6:00pm-6:45pm

4-6th grade students who do not have prior experience on cello

Classes start the week of Monday October 12th and end the week of Monday May 24th

Students will bring and take home their own basses

Classes follow the Elementary School Calendar. No school on a Monday = No Bass Classes

Families must transport and take home bass to/from every class

Class 2:

Monday evenings from 6:45pm-7:30pm

4-6th grade students who have prior experience on cello
