Corvallis Youth Symphony Auditions 2019

Thank you for signing up to audition for the Corvallis Youth Symphony’s 2019-2020 season! To audition for CYS, students must be members of their school instrumental music program and in grades 9-12. Auditions will be held on Wednesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 13 at Crescent Valley High School in room B2, between 4:30-8:30pm. Audition slots will be 10-minutes long.

Audition Requirements:

Strings

  • Prepare contrasting sections (lyrical/technical) from a solo in the standard repertoire. Please prepare no more than 2-3 minutes of each section.
  • Prepare a 2-octave (minimum) or 3-octave (preferred) major or minor scale of your choice. Please be prepared to play the scale at quarter note = 60, two notes per bow, ascending and descending, with arpeggios.

Winds

  • Prepare contrasting sections (lyrical/technical) from a solo in the standard repertoire. Please prepare no more than 2-3 minutes of each section.
  • Prepare a 2-octave (minimum) or 3-octave (preferred) major or minor scale of your choice. Please be prepared to play the scale at quarter note = 60, slurred, ascending and descending, with arpeggios.

Percussion

  • Prepare contrasting sections from a marimba or xylophone solo in the standard repertoire. Please prepare no more than 2-3 minutes of each section.
  • Prepare a 2-octave (minimum) or 3-octave (preferred) major or minor scale of your choice. Please be prepared to play the scale at different tempi (quarter = 60 to 120).
  • You will be asked to perform standard snare drum rudiments, or you can substitute a short excerpt from a standard snare drum solo.
  • You may be asked to demonstrate tuning and basic bow strokes on timpani.

2017 Cabaret 🌟 Screen Gems ⭐️⭐️✨

Please join us for our annual fundraising event! The annual CYSA Classical Cabaret is Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Corvallis High School. This family-friendly event will feature a pops concert of Hollywood hits and videogame music favorites, presented by the Corvallis Youth Symphony in the CHS Theater from 7:30 to 8:45 pm. After the concert (from 9:00 to 11:00 pm), head to the CHS Atrium, which will be transformed into a New Orleans-style jazz club with a swing dance hosted by Portland hot jazz sensation, the Shanghai Woolies. We guarantee you’ll be out of your seats and on the dance floor! Contributions to CYSA will be matched.

CYS Auditions 2016

CYS new member auditions will be held in the evening of August 25th beginning at 6pm. Students who wish to audition should attend the first day of CYS summer camp from 3:30 to 6pm. Music will be provided at camp. Audition results will be available that evening. Students should plan to be available for camp on Friday and Saturday if their audition is successful and can register and pay then. Recruiting for all strings, clarinet, and percussion only. Other instrument seats were filled for 2016-2017 during June auditions. CYS accepts members who will be in grades 9 – 12 this fall. Members must be enrolled in their school’s band or orchestra program if there is one. Returning CYS musicians don’t need to re-audition.

2016 Cabaret – Romance and Dance

Please join us for our annual fundraising and fun-raising event! The annual CYSA Classical Cabaret is Saturday February 13, 2016, at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center on the OSU Campus. The first part of the evening (6:30-8:15pm) features elegant three-course desserts with local wine pairings (non-alcoholic beverage option available) in the ballroom. The second half of the evening (8:30-11:30pm) features the talented Corvallis Youth Symphony and a thrilling concert by the Shanghai Woolies, a hot jazz band from Portland founded by members of local sensation Pink Martini — We guarantee you’ll be out of your seats and on the dance floor! 2015 Classical Cabaret “Salsa II: Havana Nights” Tickets

The annual CYSA Classical Cabaret is Saturday March 14, 2015, at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center on the OSU Campus. The evening begins with appetizers, dinner, and wine at 5:00 PM for guests who purchase a $100 dinner ticket. The Cabaret itself, including dancing and desserts, begins at 8pm with Corvallis Youth Symphony performing. Pilon d’Azucar, a band of Cuban musicians who studied at the best music schools in the city of Havana and who have taken up residence in Portland, performs for dancing from 9pm to 11:30pm. The evening includes salsa lessons! Tickets are available only through this page (see below). You may self-print tickets once you purchase them.
