The Corvallis Youth Symphony Association (CYSA) invites you to audition for the opportunity to play in the Willamette Valley Junior Honors Symphony (JHS) during its 2016 season. JHS is a full symphony orchestra for intermediate wind, string, and percussion players in grades 6 through 10. Being part of JHS will give you an exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform symphonic music with other dedicated music students.
Auditions will be held on the following dates:
- Monday January 11th (2:45-5pm) at North Albany Middle School
- Tuesday January 12th (5-8pm) at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis
- Thursday January 14th (5-7pm) at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis
The first of 10 weekly rehearsals will be Tuesday February 9th at Crescent Valley High School from 7:00 to 8:30pm, with a retreat (where professional music teachers coach individual sections of the orchestra) from 9am-12noon on Saturday April 2nd. Some rehearsals will be held at North Albany Middle School. The season will culminate in a concert with CYS on Sunday April 24th at 3pm at LaSells Stewart Center.
Andy Nelson returns as conductor of JHS for his 9th season. Mr. Nelson is the band director at North Albany Middle School and brings enthusiasm and experience to this role. Bryce Caster, former CYS member and U of O music performance graduate, will assist Mr. Nelson with the string sections.
Your parent or guardian must accompany you to your audition. You will be asked to play a 2-octave scale and a short (two to three minute) excerpt of your choice from solo repertoire.
You must be a member of your school’s band or orchestra program to be a member of JHS.
JHS tuition for the 10-week season is $195. Scholarships are available for significant financial need.
