Music educators agree on the importance of cultivating young string musicians at an early age. Playing an instrument increases reasoning skills and builds teamwork, discipline, cooperation and a sense of belonging. Learning to make music encourages creativity. More importantly, it's just plain fun.

The Corvallis Youth Symphony Association provides direction and support for the Elementary Strings Program, Levels 1 and 2. All public, private, and home school students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are invited to enroll in Elementary Strings classes. Parents are encouraged to register for classes with their children for no additional charge; however, donations are always welcome since tuition does not cover the costs of the ES Program.

Strings instruction for Levels I and II consists of two 45-minute classes per week. Classes begin the first week of October. Instruments can be rented locally from Gracewinds Music and Nancy Rohn Violins. The cost of instrument rental is not included in ES tution.

Fees

Tuition for instruction book and CD is $250 (one payment) or $35 per month (eight payments). A $15 registration fee is required. Tuition includes twice weekly group sessions, and many wonderful performance opportunities. Financial aid (half tuition) is available for students who qualify for the Oregon Child Nutrition Program. Proof of eligibility is required at the time of registration.

Tuition does not cover all expenses for Elementary Strings. A substantial portion of its budget is provided by donations, which are always appreciated. VISA, American Express, and MasterCard are accepted.

Registration forms are available June-September at Gracewinds Music, 137 SW 3rd Street.

Full-time Teacher

Kathleen Smith is the conductor of CJS and a full-time Elementary Strings instructor. She earned both her Bachelor of Science in Music and her Masters of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University.
